How to Remove Stains from Self-Tanning Products

Stains from self-tanning lotion on clothes and sheets doesn’t mean they have to be thrown out. We’ve gathered everything you need to know to remove these kinds of stains.

The active ingredients in most self-tanning products are made of plant-based sugars, who react with oxygen and make your skin look tanned. However, the tanning lotion can stain your clothes, sheets and mattresses. The tricky thing with self-tanning products is that they work gradually, meaning you rarely notice the stains right away.

Stains from Self-Tanning Products on Clothes

If you notice a stain from a self-tanning product on your garment, act right away and do like this:

    1. Rinse the stain with warm water.
    2. Soak the stain with dishwashing liquid.
    3. Work the stain from inside the garment, dab gently with a sponge.
    4. Rinse with warm water.
    5. Wash the whole garment according to the care label instructions.

Stains from Self-Tanning Products on Sheets and Mattresses

To remove stains from sheets, do the same as for clothes. We recommend a White Laundry Detergent if your sheets are white. But, since you can’t machine wash mattresses, follow these steps:

    1. Use a sponge and dab the stain with hot water.
    2. Put some dishwashing liquid on the stain.
    3. Work the stain with the sponge and washing up liquid, add more water now and then.
    4. Repeat until the stain is removed and let the mattress dry.
